Host a Community Salute
Interested in opening up your location as an official 9/11 Salute venue? We are looking for civic organizations, parks, churches, VFWs, fire/police departments, and other locations to open their locations as official venues. No matter the scale of your event, you are taking part in the nationwide community continuous salute.
What does hosting entail?
- Choose a the salute time period (5 minutes, 30 minutes, one hour, two hours, dawn to dusk, or whatever works best)
- Provide a flag and the location for community members to gather and salute
- Determine the method of salute — all participants salute for the full duration? Participants cycle in for 3-minutes?
- Provide necessary infrastructure (restrooms, parking, water)
Hosting can take many forms from simple to very involved. If you aren’t up to making your own event public, you can still organize your own private event for your group or take part in a community event.
Example Salutes:
Venue that can support hundreds of people: Multi-hour event where participants arrive on their own schedule. Participants line up in a series of lines (of a dozen or so people) facing the flag. The line closest to the flag salutes for 3 minutes and then marches off on queue. The next line advances and salutes for 3 minutes. Can include scheduled speeches by local community members, patriotic bands, and other scheduled program. Consider ringing a bell at the times the planes crashed on 9/11/01. Community members can each place a small flag in the ground to collectively create a field of flags.
Medium venues: 1-3 hour salutes where participants arrive, join, and salute for their own desired durations. Participants come and go as they need.
Small venues: 10-30 minutes salute where participants salute the entire time. Great for schools, churches, or civic organizations — e.g., encourage students at a school and their family members and local community members to gather 20 minutes before school starts to salute the flag in front of the school.
